Candle Care Tips

Using candles can be both practical and aesthetic. Here are some steps to ensure you’re using them safely and effectively:

1. Choose the Right Candle: Select candles appropriate for your purpose. Beeswax and soy candles tend to burn cleaner than paraffin candles, which can produce soot and toxins.
2. Select Safe Placement: Place candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces away from drafts, flammable materials, and out of reach of pets and children. Avoid placing them near curtains, bedding, or anything that could catch fire.
3. Trim the Wick: Before lighting, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6 mm) to prevent excessive flickering and smoking. A shorter wick also helps the candle burn more evenly and efficiently.
4. Light Safely: Use a long-reach lighter or matchstick to light candles, and avoid leaning over the flame. Ensure all other candles are extinguished before lighting a new one.
5. Monitor While Burning: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep an eye on it, especially around pets and children. Extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.
6. Allow Proper Burn Time: For the first burn, allow the candle to melt across the entire surface to prevent tunneling (uneven burning). This might take a couple of hours depending on the size of the candle.
7. Limit Burn Time: Avoid burning candles for more than 4 hours at a time to prevent overheating. Allow the candle to cool for at least 2 hours before relighting.
8. Extinguish Correctly: Use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame to extinguish the candle. Avoid blowing the candle, as it can cause hot wax to splatter.
9. Store Properly: Store candles away from heat and sunlight to prevent them from melting or becoming discolored. Keep them in a cool, dark place when not in use.
10. Dispose of Properly: Once the candle has burned down to within 1/2 inch of the bottom, extinguish it and discard the remaining wax. You can reuse the container or recycle it if it’s made of glass.
